Mexico is planned to close one of the world's largest landfills by the end of 2011. There are more than 12,000 tons of garbage dumped there each day. In total, it is estimated that there is 76 million tons of garbage. There is a concern that the landfill could be a flood threat. The garbage could disrupt the water flow out of Mexico City. The landfill is overflowing because there had been no effort to sort through it or recycle it. Only about 6% of Mexico's garbage is recycled. The closing of the landfill is an attempt to lower the greenhouse gases caused by the landfill. The landfill will be replaced by 4 state- of- the- art garbage recycling centers that would burn the garbage for energy.
